A Community of Family Bike Campers
Whether riding in the neighborhood or riding in nature and for first-time bike campers to seasoned veterans, this series aims to foster supportive family cycling experiences.
2017 was our first year of programming which started with a tour to Illinois Beach State Park. Since then, we have led 4-5 family bike camping trips each year ranging from 15 to 50 riders. We also have day trips as well. The rides are designed to showcase the amazing diversity of routes and destinations that can be reached in less than 30 miles. Pathways to our natural habitats lie right outside our front door.
We have something for everyone: easy to advanced, bike trails, street riding, off-road, and even a mini-tour.

Family Bike Camping and Day Trips
We want to help families get out into nature, having fun, and building community. To help kids make that crucial, instinctive connection with nature at a young age. And all while having a fun bike adventure! We do this in three ways.
1. Day Trips We lead a handful of these each year. They are anywhere from 10-20 mile days at a chill pace with lots of time to hangout, have fun, maybe even have a picnic at the woods. The idea here is to fill the gap between neighborhood rides and family overnights so kids can get experience with long miles without the pressure of camping. 2. Where the Wild Things Grow: A Ride to Ecological Service Giving back to nature and learning by immersion. We lead these mainly for adults and high school youth, but we do have a couple each year that are open to family riders. During these events, we ride to a local habitat, complete habitat restoration (think removing invasive species or beach clean-ups), and learn a bit more about issues that our native habitats face. 3. Bike Camping Overnight Trip This is what its all about! Loading up the bike and the kids bikes and enough gear for the whole family. And pedaling. Getting out there and having an adventure. Together as a family and together as a bike adventure community. Ride through the woods. Cook over the fire. Sleep under the stars. These are usually 3 day, 2 night rides with the middle day being set to enjoy the park and bask in its natural beauty. There are often short trips on Day 2 to swimming pools or nature centers. |
