Mike McGurk
Where the Wild Things Grow Assistant Director | Guide
Mike grew up in the Philadelphia suburbs, where he learned that a bike can help you discover beautiful and interesting places even among tract houses and cul-de-sacs. He has moved a few times since then (first to Baltimore, then to Durham, and finally to Chicago) and each time has gotten to know his new hometown’s geography, history, and people by bike. He joined Out Our Front Door for his first bikecamping trip in June 2024; despite getting drenched within the first hour, he could not wait to start planning his next adventure. After a week-long solo tour from Pittsburgh to D.C. later that summer and a few more overnights with OOFD, he started volunteering as a guide in 2025. When he’s not on a bike, Mike spends his time reading (mostly fiction and social history), developing film and making prints in the darkroom, practicing guitar at the Old Town School, and walking with his dog in Horner Park. He makes his living as an editor and occasional writer and has lived in Albany Park with his wife Megan since 2022.
