The Out Our Front Organization is in the process of making a series of patches for the bike camping destinations around Chicago and The Lower Lake Michigan Basin area. Where each patch is unique to it's landscape and local area.
Before embarking on a 120-mile round-trip bike journey from Chicago to the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, The Out Our Front Door Organization led a collaborative series of events to kick start their first trip of the season. Where the public took part in a 100 year old tradition, learned the battle and struggle for a National Park which sparked a world wide movement and introduced legislation that would forever change American history, and discovered the birthplace of modern day ecology.
On Thursday May 18th stop in BFF Bikes for an OOFD Bike Camp Movie Night: A locally produced documentary showcasing how the historical journey of the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore came to be —"Shifting Sands: On the Path to Sustainability"
After the film, join documentarian and Co-Producer Tom Desch for a Q&A, and check out regional bike maps & routes. Then go bike camping this season to discover first-hand about a place which exists outside all our front doors, the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore.
What better place to immerse yourself in the uniquely beautiful natural habitats of the Lower Lake Michigan Basin Area than by visiting one or more of its state parks! Imagine hopping on your bicycle, cruising a few hours past the city and its noise then suddenly finding yourself immersed in a tranquil landscape that looks and sounds like what most of the State of Illinois looked and sounded like before the City of Chicago was even an idea.
This month, we lent a helping hand to Friends of the Major Taylor Trail, on Earth Day Weekend, organized by local bicyclist Anne Alt.
Hosted by Cook County Forest Preserves, in association with TreeKeepers of Openlands and Green Corps, the day brought us out to Chicago's South Side Whistler Woods to clear out overgrown sections of the Major Taylor Trail and to remove invasive species. We learned about new, up & coming trails and a little local history too. Read on to find out more. About
Located in the heart of Illinois' largest concentration of natural lakes is Chain O'Lakes State Park. The park borders three natural lakes - Grass, Marie and Nippersink - and the Fox River that connects the other seven lakes (Bluff, Fox, Pistakee, Channel, Petite, Catherine and Redhead) that make up the Chain. In addition, the park contains a 44-acre lake within its boundaries. With nearly 6,500 acres of water and 488 miles of shoreline, Chain O'Lakes State Park is the heart of a water wonderland. Birth of an Idea:
Putting an idea into existence is an absolutely thrilling endeavor, where imaginations can run wild….. Andrew returned home to Chicago after traveling the world and gained so much knowledge and new takes on routine approaches. The very first week of his return he traveled by bicycle. He went north south east and west. He realized the beauty within his community and beyond, and understood his origins with a clearer aspect as well as understood what it means be apart of the city he calls home Chicago..... Pedal along ancient Shorelines, where woolly mammoths once trekked and American Indians footed through native lands. Meander and traverse through prairies and oak savannas, under leafy green canopies and wide eyed vistas. Witness the brilliance of engineering architects as you roll through canyoning towers of stone and steel marvels built by the mighty hands of men from around the world. This well deserved bike adventure is as bright as the gleaming blue waters of lake michigan coupled with rural farmland roads, historic towns, and rolling rivers. It will refresh the needing adventure.
