Out Our Front Door (OOFD) is thrilled to announce that we are now a helper site for Charlotte’s Tandems US (CTUS), a wonderful organization that provides free loans of tandems and other adaptive cycles to “to anyone with a disability or additional need, so that they can ride wherever, whenever and with whoever they like.” This new partnership with Charlotte’s Tandems US will allow OOFD to increase the reach and impact of our Adaptive Program, “Bike Camping For Everyone!” by providing us with additional bikes and enabling us to loan them for longer periods of time. Charlotte's Tandems US in a non-profit based on the US. They offer free or low cost tandem or tag-along bicycle rentals to anyone with a disability or additional need, so that they can ride wherever, whenever they like. Tandems are a great way to get people with learning, visual, or physical difficulties, out cycling and it benefits the whole family. The high cost of tandems makes buying one without a longer trial period risky. Commercial tandem rentals average $60/day. People with challenges often need time to come to terms with the tandem. Charlotte’s Tandems US hopes to lower these hurdles to tandeming. Through our core value of Radical Inclusivity, we’ve seen the powerful impact our Adaptive Program has had on special needs families, who have realized that living a life rich in adventure and immersion in our natural world is for everyone, and with the right support, is accessible to everyone. We’d like to give a special thank you to Charlotte’s Tandems US’s President Mark Mulligan, who has worked with us over the course of the past year to make this partnership a reality, including driving round trip from Maryland to Chicago to personally deliver four amazing adaptive cycles to add to our small but growing stable of adaptive tandems and trailer-cycles. Hi, I am interested in using this service. My wife had an accident years ago and since then she has been scared about riding a bicycle again. I think a tandem (double bike) would help her gain trust again on a bicycle. Please let me know what is next step in order to rent or acquire one.
