Free Bike Camping for BIPOC Riders on Flock Off the Block 2025

By Glenn Schneider

Out Our Front Door won a big grant from Thrive Outside and The Nature Conservancy that is focused on us building capacity. And that capacity building will be guided by our core values, of which “Welcoming” is #1.

We always want to break down as many barriers as possible to get a diversity of people out on local bike camping adventures. We always are striving to make our rides represent the diversity of our beloved city.

And so part of the grant will provide 10 free spots on Flock Off the Block for BIPOC riders that self-report financial need. We were able to do this last year as well thanks to a grant from New Belgium Brewing and the ten spots were scooped up within 24 hours! And this year, we even have money to help these riders get their bikes tuned up before the ride.

We believe everyone deserves access to exploration in their region. Our community knows the beauty that comes from feeling connected and being outside, and we want everyone to experience these benefits. The reality, though, is that people face barriers and cost is sometimes one of them.

Flock Off the Block 2023

We often talk about our strive to be Radically Inclusive (everyone that rides with us is required to agree to our Radical Inclusivity Statement). Another way we do this is by keeping our overnights super affordable. Though we do recognize paying $100+ for a weekend bike camping trip is tough for some folks.

That’s why our new grant funded program will allow us to waive the cost of our bike camping adventures for 10 BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) identifying individuals as these communities have experienced systems that serve as barriers to accessing natural spaces.

We always strive to have our OOFD rides better represent the diversity of our fine city, from race, gender identity, sexual orientation, ability, economic status, to the types of bikes our riders use. We know that representation in outdoor recreation has lagged to include people of color, who have historically and systemically been left out. And a big part of our mission is to inspire individuals to try new things, grow confidence in overcoming challenges, be a part of a supportive and encouraging community, and create a deeper reverence for the nature and history of our home region.

So, how can you claim these free slots?

Any BIPOC identifying adult (21 years or older) who has a financial barrier to signing up for our overnight rides (no “proof” necessary) can simply sign up for our big Flock Off the Block Ride, August 9-10, to Camp Sullivan by using promo code - thriveoutsidegrant at checkout, and your ticket price will be $0. Anyone that does sign-up will be required to briefly connect with us before and after the ride to make sure we can help set them up for success on the ride as well as to provide some feedback after the ride. You can sign up for the ride here.

Please reach out via our Contact Us page if you have any questions. Looking forward to riding with you soon!
